Laboratory Objectives: Every week, the students are given a programming assignment. You can use the lab time to write your program or to discuss your program with the instructor or other students. In fact we encourage the students to discuss this with other students as a learning experience, but the code must be your own work. Copying solutions you find on the web is forbidden, as is copying other students’ work, re-writing existing code or solutions, or collaboration so close that it looks like copying. This behavior falls under the college’s definition of academic dishonesty.

Laboratory Attendance: Laboratory attendance is not required. However, this would be a good time to ask your instructor questions on things not clear to you.  Please inform the instructor ahead of time that you’ll be attending lab either in class or through email.  The lab period is also a time that is reserved for exams.  On those days, make arrangements to take the exam during the lab period.

Laboratory Grade: Your grade for the lab will be the same as your CSC-220 class grade.

Cell Phone Policy: Turn it off, please! Cell phone use of any kind (i.e., as phone, calculator, camera, etc.) is prohibited in class or lab unless an emergency situation exists which requires the student to be available by phone. In those rare instances, the phone should be placed on vibrate; the student will momentarily excuse himself/herself from class and handle phone calls outside of the room.

Laptops: Students may use laptops in class to take notes, but may not use them in any way on exams. The instructor reserves the right to suspend or ban laptop use if, as determined by the instructor, any student is using a laptop inappropriately or to the detriment of other students.

Students with Disabilities: If you have a disability and need assistance, please notify your instructor and make an appointment with the Office of Disability Services (27/2nd floor), or call 755-4785. Academic accommodations become effective when Disability Services, the instructor, and the student complete all paperwork and may not be used to alter a grade on previous course work.

Statement on Academic Integrity:

Academic integrity is vital to the learning process and dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any student whose conduct involves academic dishonesty will receive a sanction appropriate to the nature and severity of the violation in accordance with the Policy on Academic Integrity, which appears in detail in the course catalog (available under Academics on the portal). If a student is unclear about whether specific conduct may constitute academic dishonesty, the student should talk in advance with the course instructor.

A faculty member who has evidence of a student failing to adhere to the Academic Integrity Policy has a duty to report the conduct to the Office of Academic Affairs, which will maintain records of the allegation and the disposition of the matter. When conduct involving academic dishonesty occurs in the faculty member’s class, she or he may elect to attempt to resolve the matter informally, in which case the faculty member may, among other sanctions, assign the student a grade of F for the course and/or for the particular assignment, or grade so much of the assignment that represents the student’s own work, or require that the student repeat the assignment or a similar assignment. The faculty member may elect to refer the matter directly to Academic Affairs for consideration and disposition by the Standing Committee through a Hearing Board.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Attend class and arrive on time.
  • Arrive prepared with textbooks and assignments completed when they are due.
  • Participate in group activities and class discussions.
  • Be orderly and respectful toward your instructors and your fellow students.
  • Observe the rules of academic integrity.
